Rencontres internationales de la photographie en GaspésieMission: “To have people discover and get to know photographic creation in all its forms, by means of an approach that promotes encounters between the public and artistic creation.” Rencontres is the foundation that makes it possible to carry out cultural activity featuring the photograph as leitmotiv throughout the year.
Rencontres is the foundation that makes it possible to carry out cultural activity featuring the photograph as leitmotiv throughout the year. Rencontres seeks to communicate the work of professional photographers (established and emerging) by way of an original and diversified programming that consists of exhibits, artist residencies, projections and audience-development activities, both with a school-age public and the general public. Well established in the environment thanks to extensive cultural mediation work with school boards and the municipalities hosting the event, Rencontres works towards discovering the image in all its forms.
The goal of Rencontres is to carry out essential work in the matter of artistic dissemination and education. We have a deep-seated belief in the idea that get-togethers and discussions between the public and the artists foster, in the long term, a better understanding of an artistic approach and in the process of photography itself. Rencontres is the foundation that makes it possible to carry out cultural activity throughout the year for which the photograph is the leitmotiv.
The vision of Rencontres is to be a photography reference on the world scene and to position the Gaspé among leaders in cultural development, in this case in photography.
The realization of Parcours du point de vue – Gaspésie and the success the event achieved bolstered the idea of establishing, in the region, an annual rendezvous dedicated to the photograph. And it was in that light that the first edition of Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie came into being, from August 12 to September 19, 2010. The 11 host municipalities for the event welcomed more than 14 projection-lectures, 24 photographers from Québec and elsewhere, and 26 exhibits over that five-week period.
Rencontres, which estimates that it reached 20,000 people in 2010, is proud to have won its first bet: the one about positioning Rencontres and the Gaspé on a list of essential events/locations. The more-than-encouraging welcome for the first edition on the part of the photographers, the public and partners, among them the host municipalities, lent it the strength and the motivation to continue with the dissemination of photographers’ work. It therefore came back in force this year with a high-quality programming that proved to be as appealing to fans of photography as to the public at large.
THE 2011 EDITION
A region in the service of creation
For this second edition of Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie, the programming took shape thanks to the kind involvement of Robert Hébert, guest curator, and to the contributions of Claude Goulet, executive and artistic director of Rencontres, and photographer Jean-François Bérubé. Exhibits, projections and training sessions were again at the heart of the event.
And once more, Rencontres chose to champion different types of photographic record. This year, 30 photographers, either well known or just making a name for themselves and hailing from Québec, elsewhere in Canada, Europe and the U.S., were invited to take part, and over 900 photos were exhibited all along the Gaspé coastline.
The 2011 edition of Rencontres took place under the banner of celebrating and discovering the image and the area. Thanks to the artists who enthusiastically accepted the invitation! Your creations, your reflections, are a source of inspiration.
